The next hour was mostly boring. Umar closed me back in the carriage chest in case someone should come around. No one did, so there wasn’t really a reason to keep me cramped the whole time.

It did give me time to think. It felt like it had been forever since I had seen Silvia—even if it was only a couple of days. Part of me wanted her to have gotten away the day I saw her run. The other part wanted her to be waiting for me to save her. I’d get to see her faster that way.

Umar finally let me out when he made sure the coast was clear once more. I jumped out of the chest before he could close it on me again and looked around. The stable was to the right of us and the castle to the left.

It was even bigger up close. So much bigger. The towers reached up to the clouds.

“Alright, quit your gawking and let’s move,” Umar said and led the way toward the side of the palace. The air smelled clear of any human Sihmorians, at least for now. The scents would most likely change once we were inside.

We got to the back of the palace without much trouble. Umar looked uneasy about all this, but we were having good luck. Humans and their nerves. His rotten plant wasn’t even helping him. He motioned toward the door. I tilted my head to the side. “Anyone in there?” he whispered. I padded to the door and sniffed underneath it—all clear.

I backed up and then looked at the door handle. He hesitantly reached for it. He moved so slowly. I jumped at the door. Come on, Umar, it’s safe!

He got the message, quickly opened the door and went inside, closing it after I padded inside. I took a deep breath as Umar led me through the kitchens. No one was here. Umar’s unease only grew as we reached the hallway. He motioned down the hall, and I looked down it. No sound. No smell. Unless he counted the mice I could hear.

We continued down the hall and through the maze of hallways and doors. This palace was huge on the outside, but it felt even bigger inside. Umar finally found a set of stairs and looked at the map. I stepped onto the platform and looked up and down the spiral stone staircase. I couldn’t see very far, but my nose never lied.

“We’re close to the dungeons. They are down, probably should check there first before going up.”

No, I could smell the dungeons. That is if they smelled of rats and waste. I could also smell traces of humans down there, but no Silvia. I turned my nose upwards. Up the stairs was less revealing scent-wise, but I had a feeling they would keep a princess in a tower, not a dungeon. Humans always do that.

I began to climb upwards.

“What about—”

“Trust me, human,” I said despite knowing he could not comprehend. He followed me when I did not break my stride upwards.
